Protecting Power in the Datacentre

The modern datacentre is changing rapidly due to the emergence of the Internet of Things and related fundamental and structural changes in telecommunications and IT. However, the ability to monitor and manage the power infrastructure running mission-critical and other systems is not as comprehensive as it should be,according to IoT Evolution. No single solution oversees uninterruptible power systems (UPS), power distribution units (PDUs) and other systems.

Meeting this challenge includes entry level power management solutions that provide capabilities such as discovering UPSes, PDUs and other network-enabled power devices, as well as the ability to group and display these devices in logically arranged tree structures. There also are enterprise-grade power management solutions.

The bottom line is that power monitoring and management is both vital and complicated. Several systems – such as virtualization management, specialized power monitoring and management platforms –are needed.

Providing power to datacentres and ensuring that mission-critical elements stay online are big issues. In July, Facebook said that it would power a $1 billion data center in Fort Worth, Texas, solely with wind power.
